Cotonou street food

Cotonou Street Food

So after the relaxing time, we had in Ouidah (read the article here), we set off to Cotonou, to get a feel of the city at night and of course check out the street food.
Well here’s what we found.

For lunch, we found a Palm soup and Peanut soup with cassava fufu, staples in Benin cuisine. It had goat-meat and something else.

So I asked the bar owner in as much English/broken French, what the second thing in my soup was. Turns out it was Fromage (cheese); deep-fried cheese y’all! It tasted good, it was just an odd combination for me, to pair dairy with palm-oil based soup.

Nearby we found a woman frying fish an, of course, we got some.

Don’t remember what kind of fish it was though, but it tasty.

After doing a bit more exploring, and of course, buying more escargot (snail), and some sort of ginger tea that could heal all ailments, we returned to the city square.

It was finally evening, and the atmosphere had become a lot more festive. There was a large projector screen showing a live football, the chairs and tables had been set up outside around the projectors. Different vendors were grilling meats from chicken to bushmeat.

So, of course, my sister and I made our rounds and settled on what we thought was beef suya. It was goat-meat suya! We had never seen or heard

of that. Turns out the vendor had gone to state in Nigeria, Sokoto, to learn how to make suya. Well, I can definitely say it was absolutely delicious.

Well besides discovering some of the staples of Benin,

I got to spend some quality time with my favorite sister!
